The recent study of breakdown data from the RAC has revealed 1.5% of all call-outs were due to problems caused by potholes. And whilst this may appear as a small percentage, the reality of how vast the UK’s pothole problem is, has been branded as “shocking” by Nicholas Lyes, the RAC Head of Roads Policy.

Over half a million potholes were reported to local authorities in 2017 with 512,270 recorded in England, Wales and Scotland. However, with 51 councils having failed to provide figures as well as thousands being unreported each year, the realistic figure has been estimated at over 675,000.

Mr. Lyes stated “…we believe the sheer size of the increase is further proof the condition of our roads is worsening.” With this in mind the RAC have urged motorists to report potholes to their local authorities, especially as the colder months approach.
