3 things you didn't know about Brabus | News | Sandown Brabus

The Brabus brand may be well-known, but where did it all start and how did it develop? Read about some interesting facts you didn’t know about Brabus.

1. Where did BRABUS get its name?
After deciding to begin his own brand, Buschmann registered the BRABUS company in Germany with a dear friend, Klaus Brackmann due to German laws stating a company must be established by at least two people.
The company name was therefore derived from the first three characters of the founder’s surnames (Brackmann and Buschmann). However, following the company’s development, Brackmann’s interest in the vehicle modification business dampened and his shares of the company were sold to Buschmann for 100 euros.
2. Why does the steering wheel remain un-customised?
Have you ever noticed? During modification, everywhere on the vehicle, the iconic 3-pointed Mercedes-Benz star gets replaced with the company’s capital ‘B’ logo. That is, everywhere except the steering wheel.
This is due to safety regulations which prohibit the steering wheel from being altered in any way. The Mercedes logo on the steering wheel houses the airbag, and as BRABUS are yet to develop their own airbag system, it is important that the safety function of the original airbag is not compromised in any way.
3. What makes BRABUS the largest tuning brand in the world?
Delivering approximately 6500 cars per year, the numbers speak for themselves in terms of the success of BRABUS. However, a number of factors relating to the in-house expertise sets the BRABUS brand apart from the rest:
- Everything, excluding paintwork and a number of other minor details, takes place in-house.
- BRABUS offers a three-year warranty with every conversion carried out.
- BRABUS headquarters houses its own ‘noise-testing track’. This feature must be officially certified by government institutions, meaning it is the only one in the surrounding area. This also means it is in high demand, and other companies make use of the facility from time to time.
- The highest quality work sometimes requires the power to refuse. BRABUS often encounters an eccentric customer or two who may have a vision that is simply not realistic. In these cases, BRABUS decide to kindly refuse this business to prevent compromising a number of safety and quality aspects. This effectively earns BRABUS its respect and sets them apart from a multitude of smaller tuning companies who may be willing to perform such work.
